Turning critical procedures into engaging safety stories
Clients in the Sustainable and Renewable Energy sector have extensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) covering critical operational and safety practices.
While these documents contain essential technical information, their length and text-heavy nature can make important procedures difficult to absorb, particularly across a diverse workforce working across different roles, locations and levels of reading proficiency.
NIST Global transformed these detailed SOPs into focused 3–5-minute 2D safety animation videos, combining storytelling, workplace-specific visuals, practical demonstrations and multilingual adaptations.
The objective was simple: make critical procedures easier to understand, more relatable and more accessible - without compromising their technical accuracy.
Making complex SOPs easier to understand
The clients needed to communicate important procedures consistently to workers, staff, contractors and visitors at renewable energy sites.
The SOPs contained critical information but were often:
- Lengthy and technically detailed
- Text-heavy
- Time-consuming to read
- Difficult to absorb quickly
- Challenging to communicate consistently across a diverse workforce
The challenge was not simply to shorten the documents. The objective was to transform detailed technical content into a learning experience that people could understand, relate to and apply in their actual workplace.
From written procedures to visual workplace stories
NIST Global transformed lengthy SOPs into focused 3–5-minute 2D animation videos.
Instead of simply converting written content into animated slides, the procedures were reimagined as relatable workplace stories.
Characters, conversations, realistic scenarios and visual demonstrations were used to bring the procedures to life and show learners what to do, how to do it and what to avoid.
This created a more engaging and accessible way to communicate critical safety and operational information.
Our Approach
1. Story-First Learning
Each animation begins with a realistic workplace scenario that workers may encounter at a renewable energy site.
Characters experience a situation, identify the relevant risk or procedure and demonstrate the appropriate course of action through conversations and visual sequences.
This approach turns technical information into a story that learners can recognise and relate to.
2. Bringing the Client's Workplace to Life
Clients shared photographs and references of their actual renewable energy sites, equipment and work environments.
These references were used to recreate site surroundings, structures, equipment and workplace conditions within the 2D animations.
By reflecting familiar environments, the learning experience was connected directly to the workforce's actual workplace.
3. Simplifying Complex Procedures
Detailed SOP content was analysed and transformed into clear visual sequences, character interactions and practical demonstrations.
Rather than relying on lengthy written instructions, the animations visually communicated: What to do. How to do it. What to avoid.
This helped convert complex procedural information into focused learning moments.
4. Designed for a Diverse Workforce
The videos combined visuals, narration, characters and concise on-screen text.
This reduced dependence on lengthy written content and supported learning across different workforce groups, locations and levels of reading proficiency.
5. Multilingual Adaptation
The animations were adapted into multiple regional and international languages while maintaining attention to language quality and technical accuracy.
For one client, the content was adapted into seven regional Indian languages. For another client, the animations were adapted into three international languages.
The translated versions received positive feedback for language quality and technical accuracy, demonstrating that critical safety information could be localised while retaining its intended meaning.
The Transformation
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Lengthy SOP documents | 3–5 minute 2D animation videos |
| Text-heavy instructions | Visual storytelling |
| Detailed technical explanations | Simple, focused demonstrations |
| Reading-dependent learning | Visual and audio-supported learning |
| Document-based procedures | Realistic workplace scenarios |
| Limited engagement with lengthy content | Story-driven learning |
| Single-language content | Multiple regional and international languages |
| Written descriptions of the workplace | Client-specific workplace visualisation |
Making critical procedures easier to consume
The transformation enabled clients to communicate critical procedures through short, engaging and relatable visual learning experiences.
The approach also opened opportunities to transform additional technical and operational content into engaging digital learning experiences.
The animations were well received by clients and consumed by thousands of workers across the globe.

- Complex procedures presented through practical demonstrations.
- Thousands of workers reached across global operations.
- Further opportunities to transform technical and operational content into digital learning.
Where HSE expertise meets digital learning
Transforming an SOP into an effective learning experience requires more than animation capability. It requires an understanding of HSE requirements, workplace risks, adult learning and how people consume information.
NIST Global combines HSE expertise with instructional design, storytelling and 2D animation capabilities to create learning experiences built around real workplace requirements.
Our approach covers the complete transformation journey - from understanding the original SOP and developing the learning story to creating client-specific visuals, adapting content into multiple languages and refining the final animation.
The focus is not simply on creating an animated video. It is on transforming what people need to know into what they can see, understand and apply.
Transforming how critical procedures are communicated
This was not simply about animating an SOP.
It was about transforming how critical procedures are communicated to a diverse workforce.
By combining storytelling, instructional design, 2D animation, client-specific workplace visualisation and multilingual adaptation, lengthy SOPs were transformed into short, relatable and accessible learning experiences.
- From lengthy documents to 3–5-minute animations.
- From reading procedures to seeing them in action.
- From written descriptions to the client's own workplace.
- From a single language to a multilingual learning experience.
