Is it possible to transform 16 hours of HSE training into 45 minutes without compromising the important knowledge?

For this project, the answer was yes.

The client had a comprehensive Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) training program that was being conducted via a 150+ slide PowerPoint presentation, as part of a 2 days, 16 hours classroom training program. Although the training program offered all the information that the learner had to know, it was becoming more and more difficult to conduct this training for a larger workforce.

Since every trainer could train only 25 people per batch, every new training session would require trainers, classrooms, and a lot of time spent by employees on things other than their regular tasks.

So, the task was not merely putting this presentation online. What the client needed was a more concise, engaging, consistent and scalable delivery of this important HSE knowledge.

The goal was set: to convert a long classroom training program into an engaging digital training course without reducing the important knowledge that the learner had to gain.

Also, this was how the transformation started.

The Challenge

Moving beyond a slide-by-slide conversion

On the surface, developing an e-learning solution based on the 150+ slides presentation appeared quite simple. But uploading the same slides onto the website would not help the client with his problem.

The original course was developed for trainer-led classrooms. There, the trainer could explain the concepts, provide relevant examples, ask questions, and interact with the learners.

The e-learning version should meet many of the above requirements in a completely different way.

The client was in need of a tool which:

  • Would allow to reduce the time spent on completing the training
  • Would keep the necessary HSE information
  • Would reduce dependency on the classroom setting and the presence of the trainer
  • Would make the learning process more engaging for the users
  • Would provide them with the possibility to verify their knowledge
  • Would provide uniform experience for all learners
  • Would allow tracking the learners' progress and completion

But there was another, more serious question behind this project: Would the learners remember and comprehend the information after completing the course? The answer could not come from simply reducing the number of slides. The entire learning experience had to be reconsidered.

The Solution

Starting with what learners really need to know and apply

NIST Global approached the project as a learning transformation rather than a presentation conversion.

The first step was to go through the existing training material with the Subject Matter Expert (SME).

Together, the critical information, procedures, practices, and learning points were identified. This helped separate the information learners needed to retain from content that could be simplified, combined or presented differently.

The goal was not to remove information just to make the course shorter. It was to make every part of the 45-minute learning experience purposeful.

Restructuring the content for e-learning

Once the important content was identified, the instructional design team began restructuring it for digital delivery. The original presentation followed the needs of a classroom session. The e-learning course needed to follow the needs of the learner. Repetitive information was consolidated. Long explanations were simplified. Related topics were brought together, and the content was arranged into a more natural learning flow.

Instead of asking learners to move through one slide after another, the course was designed around three simple questions:

  • What does the learner need to know?
  • What do they need to understand?
  • How can they apply it in the workplace?

This shift made the content easier to follow while keeping the essential learning intact.

Making the Learning More Interactive

A major part of the transformation was moving away from static presentation-based learning. The course introduced different forms of interaction and multimedia to make the learning experience more engaging.

These elements gave learners something to do rather than simply something to read. For an HSE course, this was particularly important. Safety information is much more meaningful when learners can connect it to situations they may actually encounter at work.

However, completion of a course does not guarantee learning. This is yet another aspect that was considered in the project. Instead of a single examination at the end of the course, there were knowledge checks placed at various stages during the learning process. The knowledge check would prompt the learners to reflect on what they have learned and how they could apply the knowledge in a certain situation. In doing so, the experience became more engaging and learners got an opportunity to re-enforce some of the critical HSE principles they learn. Furthermore, it addressed one of the major problems with training programs where the issue of attending training is separate from the issue of learning.

Creating a Consistent Experience

There are certain benefits of classroom training; however, the experience of the program may vary from class to class. The trainer, location, batch size, and interaction levels all play a role in how learners perceive the program. In case of e-learning, there was consistency in terms of the learning experience offered. Regardless of which class learners used to access the e-learning program, the experience they were provided with was always similar.

The final result was a 45-minute e-learning course built from the client's original 16-hour HSE programme and 150+ slide presentation — addressing both the learning and operational challenges the client was facing.

  • Less time away from work: a two-day classroom programme was brought down to a 45-minute digital learning experience.
  • Easier to scale: removing the 25-learner-per-trainer dependency made it far easier to reach a larger workforce.
