Two Incidents. One Important Lesson.
Within a span of just one week, Chennai has come across two separate incidents that involve private school buses that catch fire while transporting students. Fortunately, in both cases, the drivers acted swiftly, so that all the students were evacuated safely, without any injuries reported. While these incidents ended without any casualties, they should not be avoided or isolated events or fortunate escapes. This incident is a reminder that school transportation safety goes far beyond road safety. It demands fire preventive measures, rapid response capabilities, and preventive measures.

First Incident: School Bus Catches Fire in Velachery
The first incident happened in Velachery on 17th July 2026, when an private school bus caught fire while transporting students. According to the reports, the fire engulfed the vehicle, but the driver acted quickly by evacuating all the children before the flames spread. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and then the fire fighters later bought the situation under control.
However the incident ended without any casualties; this immediately highlighted the importance of routine vehicle inspections, taking preventive measures, and ensuring that the school transport staff remains alert to the early warning signs of mechanical of electrical failures.
Second Incident: Fire Breaks Out Near Kundrathur
Just a few days later, on 21 July, another private school bus that has students inside the bus caught fire near Kovur, which is closely located to Kundrathur. Based on the reports given, smoke began to emerge from the front portion of the bus while it was enroute to school. The driver immediately stopped the vehicle and evacuated every student before the flames engulfed the entire bus. Workers from the nearby gas filling station quickly assisted by using the fire extinguishers to suppress the fire, preventing what could have happened as a more serious incident.
Two Near Misses That Should Not Be Ignored
The fact that two school buses caught fire within a single week is a concerning trend rather than an isolated coincidence. While the absence of injuries is encouraging, relying on good fortune is never an effective safety strategy.
Every school bus transports what matters most- children. A delayed response, inaccessible emergency exits, a lack of fire extinguishers, or inadequate driver training could have resulted in a devastating outcome.
